GARLAND — A family temporarily living on the banks of Duck Creek was rescued Friday evening after pop up showers fell over North Texas.

A woman named Loretta, her teenage son and dog were at home in the afternoon when the creek quickly started to rise. Their home was a tent along its banks.

“When the water rose up to the rock, the water went underneath the tent,” Loretta said.

She tried to grab the few belongings they have, but she couldn’t match the current.

“I was going to go try to walk through the water, but it started getting deeper and deeper and deeper,” she said.

Lorretta, her son and the family pet hung on to a tree as a passerby called 911. Garland rescue crews scaled the steep bank of the creek while dodging branches, but were able to reach the family.

“They’ll tie a rescuer to a rope, where he’s anchored, lower his self down, then have another secondary rope to get everybody that’s in the creek out, so that’s what they did,” said Garland Fire Department’s Merrill Balanciere.

All three were moved to higher ground, where Loretta reunited with their husband. From there, her challenges have only grown.

“I lost my shoes, I lost my work boots, I lost my tent. That’s all I can remember, I just hurried up and got up,” she said.

Loretta said her church would be helping them find a hotel to stay in for the night.

Garland Fire officials say many homeless families can be found setting up camp under local bridges, but this is the first rescue of a family living creekside that its crews can remember.
